What is a PNG and a JPG file
PNG and JPG are both common image file formats, but they serve different purposes.
PNG files (with the .png
extension) are designed for lossless compression, making them ideal for high-quality images on the web. However, they lack support for CMYK color spaces, which limits their usefulness in print applications. In short, PNGs are optimized for screens(like those on computers and smartphones) rather than for printed media.
On the other hand, JPG or JPEG files (.jpg
or .jpeg
) use lossy compression, meaning some image quality is sacrificed to reduce file size. The degree of compression is adjustable, allowing you to balance image quality and file size based on your needs. Unlike PNGs, JPGs are suitable for both digital and print use, though they do not preserve image data as perfectly as PNGs do.
What is the need to convert a PNG to a JPG File
There are certain limitations to using PNG files. For instance, they are not suitable for professional printing because they don’t support the CMYK color model required by most print services. As a result, print shops typically won't accept PNG files.
Another key feature of PNGs is their support for transparency. This allows parts of an image to be fully transparent, meaning some pixels contain no color data at all. However, when printing or uploading a PNG to certain platforms, these transparent areas might be automatically filled with black, white, or another default background color—causing the image to appear differently than intended.
For these reasons, converting a PNG to a JPG can be very useful. JPG files do not support transparency, so what you see is exactly what you'll get when uploading. Additionally, JPGs support CMYK color profiles, making them a better choice for accurate, professional-quality printing.
